The word Curry comes from the Tamil word kari, which means spice mixture. This word has been anglicised to become Curry. In India the word curry is used to describe a dish with spicy sauce or juice. Outside India the word curry is rather used to speak about a spicy dish or the powder with the same name.

Curry powder, which seems to be a single spice, is a mixture of several spices. In India everyone prepares its own mix of spices when cooking using a box of spices, Masaladani and we do not find ready-made curry powder. Curry powder now has the advantage, even if it does not give the impression of an elaborate cuisine, to make affordable Indian cuisine

How to Use Curry

The word Curry is sometimes subject to ambiguity. We must distinguish:

Curry powder is a mixture of spices ready made with ingredients that can vary and which is much more common outside India.

The traditional Indian preparation of a sort of sauce with spices with basic and variable ingredients such as cumin, turmeric, chili, cilantro, tomato, ginger and sometimes garlic and onions.

Curry leaf, called Kadhi patta in India, and which is also used in Indian cooking.

Why use Curry

It is a mix of powdered spices which combines the qualities of each ingredient.
